Termites are destructive pests that can cause significant damage to structures if left untreated. Understanding the different types of termites, implementing preventive measures, and seeking professional pest control can help manage and prevent termite infestations. Here is some information about termite control, the different types of termites, and how to prevent them:
Types of Termites
Subterranean Termites
Subterranean termites are the most common type and live in the soil. They build mud tubes to access above-ground food sources and can cause extensive damage to wooden structures.
Drywood Termites
Drywood termites infest dry wood directly and do not require contact with soil. They are less common but can still cause significant damage.
Prevention Tips for Termite Control
Eliminate Moisture
Termites are attracted to moisture. Fix any leaks in plumbing or roofs, ensure proper drainage away from the foundation, and ventilate humid areas such as basements and crawl spaces.
Remove Wood-to-Soil Contact
Create a gap between soil and any wooden parts of your home, such as siding, decking, or supports. This prevents termites from easily accessing the wood.
Store Firewood Properly
Keep firewood elevated and away from your home. Store it at least 20 feet away from your house and inspect it for signs of termites before bringing it indoors.
Seal Entry Points
Seal cracks and openings in your home’s foundation, walls, and roof to prevent termite entry. Pay special attention to utility entry points, vents, and gaps around windows and doors.
Maintain Proper Ventilation
Ensure proper ventilation in attics, crawl spaces, and other enclosed areas. Good airflow helps reduce excess moisture that can attract termites.
Regular Inspections
Conduct regular inspections of your property, both indoors and outdoors, looking for signs of termite activity such as mud tubes, discarded wings, and damaged wood. Early detection is key to preventing severe infestations.
Defend Your Home with Our Termite Baiting Program
Silent Protectors: Baiting Systems
- Low profile Sits right at soil level to reach termite colonies- not lawnmower blades
- Quik-Lock cap To lock bait in while locking kids and dogs out
- Preferred cellulose Puri-Gel matrix that termites prefer over the wood used in homes
- Fast-acting active ingredient Novaluron eliminates termites by preventing their vital molting process
- Large containerized bait load To ensure there’s enough bait to eliminate the entire colony
- Easy-access vertical slits Large access openings invite termites in to find the bait and feed Durable design Stations constructed here in the USA
Baiting Systems
Protect your home with a termite baiting system designed to target termites at their source. These bait stations are strategically placed around your property, attracting termites as they forage for food. Once they start feeding at a station, they carry the bait back to their colony, sharing it with others. Because termites are highly social, they not only feed together but also groom and interact closely, spreading the bait throughout the colony. Leveraging this natural behavior, our system delivers a powerful, colony-wide solution, eliminating termites and safeguarding your home from future infestations.
Unlike traditional termite bait systems, Trelona starts working immediately. Older systems that rely on wood bait require termites to find and infest the timber first, leading to frustrating delays of several weeks before treatment can begin. Trelona, however, comes with pre-loaded bait, ready to target the most destructive termites, including Schedorhinotermes and Coptotermes. Its discreet design allows for flexible use, whether as an active treatment or a monitoring system. And here’s a bonus: Trelona requires only half the drilling compared to standard systems, saving time and minimizing disruption to your property.
Stay a step ahead of termites with our proactive protection plan.
- Our system ensures early detection of termite activity.
- Draws them out of your home before they can cause damage.
- Termite treatment program is always active, you can count on uninterrupted protection.
- Each year, your treatment is refreshed or the bait remains effective, guaranteeing continuous defense against these persistent pests.
The Life Cycle Of Subterranean Termites
Trelona offers cutting-edge termite protection with Novaluron, a powerful chitin synthesis inhibitor. Preloaded in a clear case, it allows termites to feed naturally and uninterrupted. This revolutionary bait technology is specially designed to be highly attractive to termites, ensuring they take the bait. Compared to other systems, Trelona uses less bait to achieve complete colony elimination, making it the most efficient in-ground defense against termites available today.
ATBS Stations are engineered for rapid termite detection and elimination. In fact, a university study showed that termites found ATBS Stations faster than Sentricon stations. The study placed both types of stations just 0.5 meters from an active termite colony, with 20 replicates checked daily over a 46-day period. The results speak for themselves: ATBS Stations outperformed the competition, offering a faster and more effective solution for protecting your home.
Installing termite bait stations around your home is straightforward, but there are a few important tips to ensure maximum effectiveness. The goal is to create a protective barrier that either stops termites from entering your home or alerts you to their presence. Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Walkways: Place stations on the outer side of walkways, ensuring the distance between stations doesn’t exceed 15 feet.
- Decks: Position stations around the deck, maintaining a spacing of no more than 15 feet between each.
- Driveways: Follow similar placement strategies, keeping the stations evenly spaced. For installation, simply dig a hole 3 inches deeper than the station, insert it, and place stations about 5 feet away from your home, spaced 15 to 20 feet apart. This setup ensures optimal coverage and protection for your home.
Here’s a glimpse of active termites feeding on the bait and carrying it back to their colony. It’s important to note: unless more than 50% of the bait is consumed, we leave it in place. This ensures the colony continues to feed on it. We’ll check back in 120 days during the next inspection to monitor progress and ensure your home stays protected.
Foaming is an excellent and fast-acting solution for spot-treating termites. By applying foam directly into areas where you see mud tubes or exit holes, you can quickly eliminate termites in those specific spots. While the bait stations work to eradicate the main colony, foaming tackles the active foraging termites and their pathways. In some cases, you may need to drill or create small access holes to reach hidden areas, ensuring thorough treatment and protection.
