The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), which opened in 1807, is the university of public health, law, and human services in Maryland, dedicated to excellence in education , research, clinical care , and public service.

In six nationally recognized professional schools (dentistry, law , medicine, nursing , pharmacy, and social work) and an interdisciplinary Graduate School, UMB enrolls over 7,100 students. The University provides 80 doctoral, master’s, baccalaureate, and certification programs and awards most of the doctoral degrees granted in Maryland for professional practice.

UMB is a thriving academic health center that combines cutting-edge biomedical research with outstanding care for patients. In Fiscal Year 2020, UMB’s extramural funding totaled $688 million, and each tenured / tenure-track faculty member brings an average of $1.5 million in research grants to UMB every year.

With three dozen tenants and more than 1,000 employees, UMB’s 14-acre BioPark is Baltimore ‘s biggest biotechnology cluster. The marketing of new drugs, treatments, and medical devices is fueled by the research park.

History

In 1807 the College of Medicine was chartered in 1807 by the Maryland General Assembly; it is now the oldest public medical school in the nation.

In 1812 the College of Medicine was re-chartered as the University of Maryland in 1812 by the Maryland General Assembly and expanded its mission.

In 1824, the precursor of the law school, the Maryland Law Institute, was opened.

In 1840 the first dental college in the world, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, was established in 1840.

In 1841 the Maryland General Assembly chartered the College of Pharmacy the following year in 1841, making it the nation’s fourth-oldest pharmacy school.

In 1889, at the University of Maryland, Louisa Parsons, a colleague of Florence Nightingale, established the School of Nursing, one of the oldest formal nursing training programs in the nation.

In 1918 The Graduate School opened in 1918 to promote and enhance research, scholarship, and advanced studies.

In 1961 the School of Social Work opened in 1961 in response to growing social and cultural needs.
